Mitsio Islands : Nosy Ankarea, the Majestic Island
In the heart of the Mitsio Archipelago, northeast of Nosy Be, Nosy Ankarea stands out for its imposing silhouette and rugged terrain. Located close to Grande Mitsio, directly opposite Ampasindava Beach, this uninhabited island offers a striking contrast between its rocky cliffs, lush vegetation and magnificent white-sand beach. An exceptional natural setting that makes it one of the highlights of our excursions around the Mitsio Islands.
Nosy Ankarea, a spectacular landscape in the Mitsio Islands
Rising to approximately 238 metres above sea level, Nosy Ankarea has the highest summit in the archipelago. Its rugged terrain, characterised by towering basalt cliffs and steep slopes, gives the island a distinctive silhouette that is instantly recognisable from the sea.
The island features remarkably contrasting landscapes. Some cliffs plunge directly into the ocean, while the rocky slopes support a variety of vegetation, including baobabs and pachypodiums, known for their distinctive swollen trunks. This combination of rock, greenery and turquoise waters gives Nosy Ankarea its wild and majestic character.
Nosy Ankarea forms part of the Ankarea Marine Protected Area, which also encompasses Grande Mitsio and several surrounding islands, an area remarkable for the diversity of its landscapes and marine ecosystems.
A white-sand beach beneath the cliffs
At the foot of these imposing cliffs lies one of Nosy Ankarea's most beautiful treasures : a magnificent white-sand beach, fringed by lush vegetation and lapped by turquoise waters.
Usually deserted, this beach offers a rare sense of tranquillity. There are no buildings or tourist facilities here, just sand, sea and the spectacular cliffs rising above the shore.
It is in this idyllic setting that we love to stop during our excursions around the Mitsio Islands. We organise a picnic in the shade of the trees, with our feet in the sand, allowing our guests to fully appreciate the beauty and peaceful atmosphere of this remarkable location.
